Black sand

Black sand

Bali sits on a chain of volcanoes. On some of its beaches, the sand is black, fine and heavy, the trace of volcanic rock worn down by the sea. Inland, the same rock enriches the soil.

It is a reminder that an island is first a geology: fire, then sea, then plants that learn to settle.

Everything we study begins there, in the ground.
